#LunchtimeListens 018: Lia Lua

We think of ourselves as music-lovers but Julia Baker (aka DJ Lia Lua) is ALL about the music. Ten years ago, her love of afro-latin American music took her to Brazil where she got stuck into Capoeira, Candomblé and Maracatu. In 2010, for her next musically motivated trip, she headed to Cali in Colombia to study Afro-Colombian percussion for a year - as you do. Since then, Julia has participated in various percussion groups back in London, performing at Notting Hill and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Julia is currently studying for her Masters in Ethnomusicology at SOAS and presents a fortnightly show called Musicophilia for the University's radio station. On the show she plays a range of music, mainly from the huge diverse continents of Latin America and Africa but not limited to these – from Cumbia to Grime, Morna to Zouk, Dabke to Bounce, nothing is off limits. Listen up!
